Great review, Stuart. You hit the nail on the head in the first paragraph—if you’re writing “genre,” don’t avoid the stereotypes, go into them even more and push them to breaking point.
Currently reading this but ‘Char Siu’ by Scott Kikkawa also does a good job at picking away at the good cop persona. It’s written by a law enforcement officer based in Hawaii (where the series takes place) so it adds helpful color. I picked it up in Oahu from a local bookstore but wish more people knew about it!

Any book that has alternating chapters from the killers perspective has lost me or to be honest I just skip those chapters..
Another red flag for me is books written in the present tense. Is this one?
