I read this review and immediately wanted to read the book. Thanks.

I hope this book centers the most important subject under its purview, which is the six year old me who resided (as does current me) in the town of New Paltz and who has always had a lot to say about Nostalgia.

Thanks for expressing so well the dream of memory and my own preoccupations. I’m reminded also of why I loved In Search of Lost Time and Dream of Red Mansions. An illusion of an illusion of an illusion.

Thanks for the nice piece, Nicholas. “A portrait of a world that has never existed” is particularly lovely phrasing. Martin Amis makes the point that psychological processing takes time, so premature writing often produces weak prose because the mind needs more time to catch up with events. Hence the best books usually arrive years later.

Yes, the Trailways bus to and from New Paltz is stinky, alive and well. (source: I graduated from there in May!)
