I really enjoyed this and want to compliment specifically the reality of the characters. I felt like you weren't trying to make me feel any particular feeling about them other than that they were "real"
This is the best writing I've seen in TMR, very well done! The reader feels Maurice's impatience and is tested as he is, by these all-too-human characters.
I like how this evokes a mood right away. The protagonist's stakes are clearly shown, and I like how the scene shows all of the characters. I imagine this excerpt is from a chapter that introduces these characters early in the story.

Thanks so much for reading
great work, Alan
Thanks, Robbie, that means a lot
This is great, Alan, really compelling. I hope to read the whole novel sometime!
Thanks, Mike, that’s really nice of you to say
This was very good. I look forward to reading the rest of the novel. One of my favourite paintings is Fra Angelico's depiction of the lives of the Desert Fathers: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Angelico,_tebaide.jpg
Not sure what you should do with it, but I’m glad you’ve written and shared it. Thank you.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, the reader is also being introduced to these characters.
Great cover image choice. Saw some other panels from the same predella at the NGA a while ago, very cool proto renaissance works!
